The Victoria plum is by far the most popular plum variety in the UK.  It is also probably the most popular fruit tree of any species sold in UK garden centres, being self-fertile and well-known for heavy crops of very attractive fruit with a lovely red-plum colour. ‘Victoria’ Plums make delicious pies and jams, or simply eat them straight from the tree in late August. Those in supermarkets may have been picked early and allowed to ripen off-tree, reducing the flavour which is why some people think Victoria plums are inferior to other dessert plum varieties for eating fresh. These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Victoria plums are easy to grow when positioned in well drained soil in a sheltered, sunny position. Avoid winter pruning.
