Brachyglottis compacta ‘Sunshine’ is a silver-grey leaved evergreen, sun-loving shrub from New Zealand, almost fully hardy except on wet or poorly drained soils. Its leaves appear to sparkle in sunlight and its pretty yellow flowers attract insects. It has a fine bushy habit, spreading and slightly untidy if allowed to flower, but neat and suitable for clipping into a low hedge. Young plants can be used in summer container displays as a foil for colourful flowers. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM). Grow Brachyglottis compacta ‘Sunshine’ in well-drained soil in full sun. Cut back after flowering to maintain a compact shape.
