Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) hedge plants have mid-green foliage with deep veins and distinctive serrated edges. Turning coppery-brown in autumn, the leaves hold on to bare branches throughout the winter providing some year-round cover and colour. Catkins appear in late spring which develop into small fruits, feeding hungry birds.
