Despite its common name and appearance, heavenly bamboo, Nandina domestica, is not a bamboo, but a relative of Berberis. Nandina domestica ‘Obsessed’ is a compact shrub grown primarily for its foliage, which emerges fiery red before turning fresh green, and then red again as autumn takes hold. In summer, pretty clusters of white flowers add to its appeal. With its long season of interest and compact habit, Nandina domestica ‘Obsessed’ is perfect for a sunny spot in a small garden, and can also be grown in containers. For best results grow in moist but well-drained soil in partial shade, in a sheltered spot away from strong winds. In colder regions it may need protecting from frost. Cut back untidy stems in spring.
